The huge list of Twitter tools

Raw list (waiting refinement later)

In the passed 6 months, I saw a tremendous list of new Twitter services, each one adding lots of value for us. The reason is it is easy to play with the Twitter API. I'll talk more about it later. Most of the tservices are browser based, a few of them are desktop like Twhirl and the excellent Tweetdeck both Adobe Air based.

So here is a first list, I'll divide into two categories : one for web based app, one for desktop apps.

Desktop Twitter tools

  • TweetDeck is a desktop written in Adobe AIR plateform, if you have a lot of activity on Twitter, this client is for you. it embeds several URL shortening services, works with a few other web tools, let you create groups of twitterers, and much more.
  • Twhirl is now owned by the company of Loic Le Meur, foundr of Seesmic, it does pretty much the same as Tweetdeck. I haven't tried the evolution of this software lately, but htere are a lot of improvements ongoing. It is also written on Adobe's AIR.

Web based Twitter tools

  • TweetScan as well as Twitter default search Engine let you search , the former has notification by RSS or email for you.
  • BackTweets, allows you to find tweet that have a link to a given url, letting you who mentions a url
  • Twinfluence, will measure your influence on Twitter based on your follower number and followings. While it's hard to explain the influence on Twitter, it does provide you a rank.
  • Twitpic, has came quite early, it allow you to post a picture and tweet about it. A nice service that fills the lack of rich feature of Twitter.
  • TweetStat is self explanatory, it will give you statistics about your tweets, it takes a while to load your datas. Just keep in mind that statistics in general help you analyse your behavior and pinpoint potential areas to be improved (eg. whom you talk to most)
  • TwitterCounter, on the other hand tracks your number of followers. TO my knowledge, it is the only thing it does...
  • TwitterFeed is the Feedburner for Twitter. Your blog entries will get delivered to Twitter via this service.
  • Monitter is a service tracking the hot trends on Twitter, it does in fact track any words on Twitter. Just enter your desired words and the AJAX interface will start to list tweets that has the words in them.
  • TweetBurner, when you post a link on Twitter (using mostly a URL shortening service), you may want to track the number of click through, this service is for you. A must for web analytics addicts !.
  • TwitterFone is a very interesting speech to text service. After creating an account, you dial their telephone number (if it is available in your country), and just talk, I don't know if real people are behind but the result is good despite my non native english accent.
  • Twellow, is the equivalent of the yellow pages, at first glance not so interesting, who cares about yellow pages these days? but a just type your Twitter profile in it to see in which category the algorithm has classified you, a little scary !
  • TweetBeep is like Google Alert, whenever a chosen word is mentionned on the Twittersphere, you'll be notified.
  • TwitterFall is "a way of viewing the latest 'tweets' of upcoming trends and custom searches on the micro-blogging site Twitter"

Monetization services

I could not list those services in the second category, so I put them here. Try to earn money with Twitter !

  • Be a magpie, is a monetization service based on Twitter, it will ask you to aprove and ad, then tweet the ad in your stream. I was told that it is mostly a pay per lead monetization, not a pay per impression, so it might not work well for everybody.
